Q

function of CNS?

A

Primary internal communication system. Receives information from the senses and controls the behaviour and regulation of the body’s psychological processes

Q

function of the brain?

A

The brain receives information from sensory receptors and sends messages to muscles and glands. Centre of all conscious awareness and is divided into different lobes with different functions

Q

function of spinal cord?

A

Extension of the brain that is responsible for reflex actions. It allows the brain to monitor processes such as breathing and to control voluntary movements

Q

Function of the peripheral system?

A

To connect the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body and external environment. Transmits information to and from the CNS

Q

Somatic nervous system?

A

Controls voluntary movements, transmits and receives messages from the senses and it is involved in reflex actions without the involvement of the CNS so the reflex can occur very quickly

Q

What do sensory nerve pathways do?

A

Bring information to the CNS from sensory receptors, dealing with touch, pain and pressure etc.

Q

What do motor nerve pathways do?

A

Control bodily movement by carrying instructions towards muscles.

Q

Function of autonomic nervous system?

A

Regulates involuntary actions such as bodily arousal, body temperature etc.

Q

Function of sympathetic nervous system?

A

Involved in responses which help us deal with emergencies. Slows bodily processes that are less important in emergencies, Eg. digestion.
Leads to an increase in arousal. Eg : incr heart rate and bp.

Q

Function of parasympathetic nervous system?

A

Relax the individual after the emergency has passed. Decreased arousal.
Eg. slows heartrate and decr bp.

16
Q

inhibition?

A

When a neurotransmitter increases the negative charge of the post synaptic neuron

17
Q

How does electric transmission occur?

A

When a neuron is in its resting state, the inside of the cell is more negatively charged. When a neuron is activated the inside of the cell becomes briefly +’vly charged.
causing an ACTION POTENTIAL to occur.
