Biopschology Flashcards
Sperry
(Split-brain, word projection)
-11 patients with severed corpus callosum, done to treat epilepsy.
-image or word projected to RVF (processed by LH) and the same image or different is projected to LVF (processed by RH).
-information cannot be shared from one hemisphere to another with no C.C.
-could describe objects in RVF but not LVF, but could draw LVF objects.
-shows the LH is verbal and the RH is silent but emotional.
Broca
(Tan)
Lashley
(Rats)
-Removed 10 to 50% of rats brains who were learning a maze
-found no single area was more important than any other
-suggests all the brain is needed for higher mental functions like learning
-limitation, generalisation of animals to humans
Patient JW
(Split-brain)
-the RH could produce language 15 years after corpus callosum was severed, supports functional recovery and shows language area can switch sides.
Maguire et al
(Taxis)
Michel Siffre
-lived in a Texan cave for 6.5 months
-tracked his biological measurements/processes, EEGs, fMRI scans, blood pressure, body temp etc
-found from freerunning his body that he had an internal body clock of 24.5/25 hours
-limitation, low generalisability, unique as wanted to live in the cave
