Biopolymers Flashcards
Definition
A special group of macromolecules produced by living organisms.
Need for biopolymers
To reduce dependence on synthetic polymers which are not biodegradable and are manufactured from crude oil, which is a non-renewable resource.
Biopol
- structure
- brief description of production
It’s a PHA and it’s a co-polymer consisting of the monomers PHB and PHV.
Using the fermentation of sugars by bacterium, and then seperate and purified.
Biopol
- current research to reduce costs
- properties - compared to current polymer
Genetic engineering: inserting genes from R•eutrophus directly into plants/bacteria such as E•coli to make and store the biopolymer as granules in their cell wall. Result in faster growth, better yields, easier recovery.
B is denser, UV resistant, 100% biodegradable, stable in air and humid conditions, recyclable, burns cleanly, biocompatible and made from renewable resources.
