Biopharmaceutics (1) Flashcards
Biopharmaceutics
Study of the properties of therapeutic substances + their dosages/bioactivity relationships
Reasons why people live longer (in terms of therapeutic drugs)
Prescription drugs +Natural health products, vaccines, Diagnostics and workplace infrastructure
Prescription Drugs
Small molecules -peptides or proteins
Why are proteins not used in drugs very often? What can be used instead?
- Has very shot half-life.. Our body breaks down proteins very efficiently
- Synthetic amino acids can be used
Insulin + therapeutic drugs
acts like therapeutic drugs even though it is very large
How do prescription drugs get excreted?
Urine
Function of Vaccines/conjugates
Immunity and protection of illnesses
Worst case scenario for vaccines/conjugates + how to prevent it?
- could get sick when pathogen that was used in the vaccination is obtained
- Put protein on a pathogen so that body can detect it – body breaks down proteins
What are natural health products?
Vitamins, Plant extracts
Grapefruit + pills
- it can affect the liver metabolism of a drug… pill stays longer in the body = overdosage
Diagnostics
- Improved medical procedures and early detections
- ex. cameral pill or endoscopies(takes pictures as it goes through the body)
Pharmaceutical Sciences
- group of interdisciplinary areas of research that are involved with the design, synthesis, mode of action, delivery and use of drugs
Industry of pharmaceutical science purpose
Supply materials or techniques that (promise to) deliver the things people desire the most
What drugs are in demand (2015-present)
- Mental health
- Cholesterol lowering
- hypertension (blood lowering)
- These are easily changed with lifestyle/diets but people prefer quick resolution to their problems (the need to spend $$$)
Popular/in demand drugs
- Lipitor (cholesterol lowering)
- Plavix (blood thinner)
- Nexium (reduces stomach acid)
- Advair (asthma)
- Abilify (mental health - schizophrenia)
