Q

What is psychophysiology?

A

Is the physiological correlates of psychological process and behaviour and the impact of such manipulations of physiology.

Psychophysiological measures include techniques designed to access activity in a variety of bodily systems.

fMRI, horomone analysis, eye-tracking, EMG ECG, EDA. (Gaffey & Wirth, 2014).

Q

What is the sympathetic system?

A

Known for responding to stressful situations (Flight or fight).

In these situations, your sympathetic nervous system activates to speed up heart rate, deliver more blood to areas of your body that need more oxygen or responds to help you out of a stressful event.

Q

What is the parasympathetic nervous system?

A

Responsible for the body’s rest and digestion when the body is relaxed, resting, or feeding.

It undoes the work of sympathetic division after a stressful situation.

Q

What is the electrodermal activity?

A

Is the continuous variation in the electrical characteristics of the skin, which varies with moisture level. The moisture level depends on sweat glands and blood flow, which are controlled by the Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS) and Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS).

The umbrella term used for defining autonomic changes in the electrical properties of the skin.

EDA includes both background tonic (skin conductance level: SCL) and rapid phasic components (skin conductance responses: SCR) that result from sympathetic neuronal activity.

Q

Explain fake news and arousal.

A

*Researcher Edward wants to find out if fake news belief is associated with a physiological state of arousal.
* He wants to show a series of news articles, real and fake, to participants and measure their physiological responses and their responses to classifying (judging a news article as real or fake).

Q

What is STP-100C?

A

An optically isolated connection between the computer running a visual presentation and BIOPAC. Allows for images to be recorded in response to ER-SCRs.

16
Q

What is PPGED-R?

A

A Wireless amplifier typically used to measure PPG, EDA/GSR manifested on the hand.

17
Q

What are the methodological issues in BIOPAC?

A

A general friction that has to be balanced in any experiment seeking to measure EDA is determining a-priori whether a given SCR is
event-related or non-specific. If the criteria are too loose, it risks including NS-SCRs mistakenly think the values are caused by experimental manipulation. Too strict, one risks missing many ER-SCRs to meet your criteria by wrongly discarding or misclassifying them as NS-SCRs.

18
Q

What are the solutions for BIOPAC?

A
  • EDA is usually expressed in conductance units (microsiemens)
  • Setting up digital channels for the application of images and physiological data
  • Standardize duration times for images and EDA
19
Q

How do you set-up BIOPAC?

A
  • UIM100c, STP100c, and PPGED-R attached to Biopac system
  • EDA set to outside digital imput signal channel
  • Gains 5 μS/V | LP: 10 | HP: DC (automatically set up in default)
  • Two EL507a electrodes with Isotropic Gel are placed on the palm or fingers.
  • Leads are connected to the
    wireless BioNomadix.
20
Q

What are the testing for BIOPAC?

A

Participant is pre-tested (i.e., quality check) to determine EDA responses.
* Participant then reviews images, responds to noises, or review articles while EDA responses are recorded.

21
Q

What is mean amplitude?

A

Mean value computed across only those stimulus presentations that produced a measurable (i.e., non-zero) response.

22
Q

What is mean magnitude?

A

Mean value computed across all stimulus presentations including those without a measurable response (i.e., zero responses).
