Biomolecules Flashcards
1
Q
4 categories of biomolecules
A
- Carbohydrates
- Lipids
- Proteins
- Nucleic Acid
2
Q
What are carbohydrates
A
- contain C,H,O atoms
2. different sizes - monosaccharides, oligosaccharides, polysaccharides
3
Q
Functions of carbohydrates
A
- Energy source - eg. glucose, starch
- Metabolic intermediates - eg. fructose, galactose
- Structural - eg. cell wall (cellulose in plants)
- Components of essential molecules - eg. glycoproteins, glycolipids
4
Q
Monomer of carbohydrates
A
Monosaccharides
5
Q
Examples of carbohydrates
A
Monosaccharides - Glucose, fructose
Oligosaccharides - Mactose
Polysaccharides - Starch, Glycogen
6
Q
What are 2 types of lipids
A
Saponifiable lipids (can be hydrolysed by alkali) and unsaponifiable lipids (cannot be hydrolysed by alkali)
7
Q
Examples of saponifiable lipids
A
Triglycerides, phospholipids, waxes
8
Q
Examples of unsaponifiable lipids
A
Steroids, cholesterol
9
Q
What are lipids
A
- Structurally heterogeneous
- Insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents
- Excess proteins, carbo and fats are converted
to fats and stored in adipose tissues
10
Q
Functions of lipids
A
- Component of cell membranes - phospholipid bilayer
- Energy stores
- Provide insulation to maintain a constant body temperature
- Chemical messengers
- Add contour to body
