Biomolecules Flashcards
General formula for Carbohydrates
Cx(H2O)y
monosaccharides
- simple sugars
- take shape as hexoses and pentoses
- bind together in condensation reactions to form glycosidic bonds
Disaccharides
- two simple sugars linked by covalent bonds
- form by glycosidic linkages
Olgosaccharides
- 3-20 monosaccharides
- act as recognition signals (eg: for blood groups) by covalently bonding to proteins and lipids on cell surfaces.
Polysaccharides
hundreds/thousands of monosaccharides (starch, glycogen, cellulose)
Main sugar forms
Glucose, Mannose, Lactose
Starch
storage of glucose in plants
A mix of branched and long chain polysaccharides
Glycogen
storage of glucose in animals
very branched
Cellulose
structural component, very stable
Ampipathic
contains both hydrophobic and hydrophillic regions
Lipid forms
Steroids, Terpenes and carotenoids
Steroid chemical arrangement
tetracyclic compounds with three 6-membered rings and one 5-membered ring.
Nucleoside
sugar (deoxyribose or ribose) and a base
Nucleotide
a nucleoside and a phosphate
The sugar phosphate backbone is bonded by..
phosphodiester linkages
