Biomolecules Flashcards
What is Zwitter ion?
It is a dipolar neutral ion which contains negative and positive charges.
Eg. Free amino acids in cells
What are amino acids?
These are the biomolecules which contain amino and carboxylic group at alpha carbon.
Eg. Glycine, Alanine
What are essential amino acids?
Essential: These cannot be synthesized in the body and are to be taken from diet.
Eg. Valine, Leucine
Non Essential Amino acids?
These can be synthesized in the body.
Eg.Glycine,Alanine
What are proteins?
These are the biopolymers of high molecular weight(10000u) composed of amino acids linked by peptide bonds. They are made of alpha amino acids
Eg. Keratin
What are globular proteins?
They are polypeptide chains which are arranged in coils.
Spherical shape
Soluble in water
Eg. Insulin, albumin….
What are fibrous proteins?
These polypeptide chains arranged in parallel with each other
They are thread like
Insoluble in water
Eg Keratin…
