BIOMOLECULES Flashcards
what are biomolecules?
Chemicals and molecules that are made inside a living thing.
What are the four major elements in living body?
Oxygen (65%)
carbon (18.5%)
nitrogen (3.3%)
hydrogen (0.5%)
these are called big four
What is cellular pool?
All chemicals, molecules, ion’s present inside cell are called cellular pool
What is the composition of cellular pool?
H2O (90-70%)
proteins (10-15%)
nucleic acid (5-7%)
carbohydrates (3%)
lipid (2%)
ions (1%)
What are the types of metabolites?
Primary and secondary
What are the features of primary metabolite?
- Take direct part in metabolism.
- Their functions can be measured.
- Found in all living organism.
eg. amino acid, nucleic acid , proteins etc.
What are the features of secondary metabolites?
- Do not take direct part in metabolism.
- Their function cannot be measured.
- These are not found in animals and rather found in plants, fungi and microbes.
What are pigments?
Carotenoids , antholyanine
Alkaloids
morphin , codenine
Toxins
Ricin and abrin
Lectins
Cancanavalin A
Drugs
Vinblastin, curcumin
Polymeric substance
Cellulose, rubber and gum.
