Biomes And Food Security Flashcards
Types of natural biomes
Forest, tundra, grassland, desert, and aquatic
How are biomes distributed?
- depends on how close area is to water
- biomes correlate to the type of climate
- how close to the equator
How do biomes differ and why?
Since biomes are controlled by their location, distance from: equator, sea, prevailing winds, and mountains, each one has unique characteristics and aspects.
List some characteristics of a tropical rainforests
-High temperatures
-most diverse ecosystem
- help regulate earths climate
Humid and heavy rainfall
List some characteristics of a grassland
- Dominated by grass
- wide and open
- inhabited by grazing animals
List some characteristics of a tundra
- coldest regions of the world
- most vulnerable to global warming
- grass, dwarf shrubs, and lichen
List some characteristics of a desert
- dry
- extreme temperatures
- most animals are nocturnal
- very little precipitation
List some characteristics of a aquatic biome
- occupies 3/4 of the earth
- full of plants and animals
- salt or freshwater
How have people altered earth to produce food?
Food irrigation, land clearing, greenhouses, fertilisers, raised animals.
Biome
A large naturally occurring community of flora and fauna occupying a major habitat.
Arable
Describes land that can be used for growing crops
Biodiversity
The number and variety of organisms found within a certain location.
Biosphere
The living part of earth
Deforestation
Clearing forests to make way for housing or farming.
Degradation
Deterioration of lands quality and worth
