Biomes Flashcards
Energy pyramid
An energy pyramid is a graphical model of energy flow in a community. The different levels represent different groups of organisms that might compose a food chain. From the bottom-up, they are as follows: Producers — bring energy from nonliving sources into the community.
Food web
A food web is similar to a food chain but larger. The diagram combines many food chains into one picture. … Food webs show how plants and animals are connected in many ways. The arrow points from the organism being eaten to the organism that eats it. A food web (or food cycle) is a natural interconnection of food chains.
Decomposer
an organism, especially a soil bacterium, fungus, or invertebrate, that decomposes organic material.
a device or installation that is used to break down a chemical substance.
Food chain
DescriptionA food chain is a linear network of links in a food web starting from producer organisms and ending at apex predator species, detritivores, or decomposer species. A food chain also shows how the organisms are related with each other by the food they eat. Each level of a food chain represents a different trophic level.
Conifer
Conifers are Gymnosperms. They are cone-bearing seed plants with vascular tissue. All living conifers are woody plants, and most are trees. Living conifers are all in the order Pinales. Typical examples include cedars, cypresses, firs, junipers, kauris, larches, pines, redwoods, spruces, and yews.
Consumer
a person who purchases goods and services for personal use.
Biome
a large naturally occurring community of flora and fauna occupying a major habitat,
Deciduous
of a tree or shrub) shedding its leaves annually.
Ecology
the branch of biology that deals with the relations of organisms to one another and to their physical surroundings.
Cycle
an interval of time during which a sequence of a recurring succession of events or phenomena is completed
Nitrogen cycle
the series of processes by which nitrogen and its compounds are interconverted in the environment and in living organisms, including nitrogen fixation and decomposition.
Biotic
living component that affects another organism or shapes the ecosystem.
Water cycle
the cycle of processes by which water circulates between the earth’s oceans, atmosphere, and land, involving precipitation as rain and snow, drainage in streams and rivers, and return to the atmosphere by evaporation and transpiration.
Abiotic factor
non-living chemical and physical parts of the environment that affect living organisms and the functioning of ecosystems.
Producer
Something that has more of its self
