Biomes Flashcards
Biodiversity
Diversity among and within plant and animal species in an environment
Biomes
A complex biotic community characterized by distinctive plant and animal species and maintained under the climatic conditions of the region, especially such a community that has developed to climax
Climate
An average temperature and rainfall in an area
Deforestation
To divest or clear of forests or trees
Desert
Deserts are places of low rainfall and comprise the arid and semi-arid regions of the world
Forest
Forests are the most diverse ecosystems on the Earth. Ranging from hot, wet, tropical rainforests to temperate forests, they have an abundance of both plant and animal life
Grassland
Grasslands are sometimes seen as transitional environments between forest and desert. Dominated by grass, they have small, widely spaced trees or no trees
Innovation
Somethings new or different introduced
Logging
The process, work, or business of cutting down trees and transporting the logs to sawmills or deforestation
Sustainable
Capable of being supported or upheld, as by having its weight borne from below
Tundra
Tundra is found in the coldest regions in the world, and lies beyond the treelike. The landscape is characterised by grasses, dwarf shrubs, mosses and lichens
Arable
Suitable land for growing crops
Productivity of land
Productivity is an economy’s ability to produce goods and services (outputs) using capital inputs (such as machinery, computer software, and land) and labour inputs. High productivity means that a large amount of output is produced with little input.
Food security
Access to the safe, healthy food you need
Innovation
New and original improvement to something, such as a piece of technology or a variety of plant or seed
Intensive Farming
Intensive farming or intensive agriculture is a kind of agriculture where a lot of capital and labour are used to increase the yield that can be obtained per area. The use of large amounts of pesticides for crops and of medication for animal stocks is common.

Latitude
The horizon lines on a map that shows distance from the equator
Altitude
The height above sea level of a particular area of land (such of a mountain)
Migration
The seasonal movement of animals in search of food and water supplies
Hibernation
One strategy used by animals to limit the loss of energy during winter
Soil
Along with the climate, this helps make biomes different from each other(by enabling different plants to grow)
Windward
The side of a mountain that moist air hits first, causing it to rise and condense
Green Revolution
Large increase in crop production in developing countries. This happened because of fertilisers, pesticides and new types of crops.
Hydrosphere
Water on or around our globe. One of four ‘spheres’.
Aquatic
Can be fresh or marine. Ocean makes up 70% of the worlds surface. Home to important staple food (fish, seafood, seaweed)
