Biomes Flashcards
definition of biome
a very large ecological area which has both flora and fauna, often defined by its abiotic factors
the 5 different biomes of the world
Forest, Desert, Grassland, Tundra and Aquatic
describe grassland and the characteristics of its flora and fauna, soil, climate and latitude
dominated by grass, absent of trees, grazing animals and reptiles, deep and fertile soil = good for agriculture, 25-55 latitude
describe desert and the characteristics of its flora and fauna, soil, climate and latitude
either very hot or very cold, DRY, nocturnal animals, plants adapted to conserve water, limited vegetation, pale colour, lack of rain which limits plant growth, high altitudes, 15-35 latitude
describe forest and the characteristics of its flora and fauna, soil, climate and latitude
diverse ecosystems, provides many modern medicines, range of species, 50% of all animal and plant life, - , little variation in climate (rainforest = hot/wet) (temperate = four seasons) (taiga = cold, long winters), 20-60 depending on forest
describe tundra and the characteristics of its flora and fauna, soil, climate and latitude
by far the coldest biome, makes up 20% of land, pretty much no humans, low diversity of f/f, simple vegetation, short growing seasons, cold temperatures and covered with ice/snow for most of year, 60-75 latitude
describe aquatic biome and the characteristics of its flora and fauna, soil, climate and latitude
hot desert: flora/fauna, soil, climate, location
temperate forests: flora/fauna, soil, climate, location
tropical rainforests: flora/fauna, soil, climate, location
ocean: flora/fauna, soil, climate, location
what are australia’s biomes
ocean, desert, grassland, temperate forest, tropical rainforests, mountains
what kinds of foods are produced in australia? and how?
what is flora and fauna?
arable land and the impacts of adequate soil
