Q
Blinders
A
Practitioners - see some things and don’t see others (i.e. pathology)
1
Q
Biomedical Model (BMM)
A
Theory about disease; focuses attention on particular aspects of health; what people should accept (in terms of health)
*Influences practices of medicine, medical education, research funding, and public beliefs
2

Q
Biomedical View
A
- Cause of disease (biological entity); specific ediology (one cause), physical reduction, and mind is irrelevant
- Disease and diagnosis (disease is real and objective); body = machine
- Treatment (fix part of machine that is broken); specialists look for “broken part” rather than looking at entire “machine”, individual = doctor-patient (don’t look beyond individual)
4
Q
Allopathic Medicine
A
Basic belief system adopted in the 1800s - “wrong to do nothing”
5
Q
Socio-medical Model (Problems and Alternatives to Biomedical Model)
A
- Cause = too simplistic; look at multiple variables (not enough), add social and psychological values (not enough), and need to look at macro affects
- Disease and diagnosis = make up diseases (socially influenced - medicalization); may be highly subjective (not reliable - two sources = two different results)
- Treatment = social factors influence treatments; focus on individual (not effective), “doing something is not always the best idea”, cure is over emphasized (focus on prevention), and don’t just treat disease (consider illness)
6
Q
Illness
A
Emotional, psychological, or social dimension of the disease experience
