Biomechanics Lab exam Flashcards
What does linear kinematics involve?
It involves the position, velocity, and acceleration of a body with no concern for the forces causing the motion.
Can movement be detected instantaneously?
No, it must be detected in comparison to it’s position at one instant with it’s position at another instant.
When does the physiology of systems fro postural control decline?
It declines with age. There has also been studies that suggest that woman tend do me more stable.
Define stability.
The resistance to both linear and angular acceleration, or resistance to disruption of equilibrium.
What is a person’s ability to control stability and equilibrium known as?
Balance.
Name a factor that affects stability.
Base of support
Describe the stance phase.
Begins with the heel strike and ends when the foot leave ground (toe-off)
Describe the swing phase.
When the foot is not in contact with the ground. Begins with toe-off and ends with heel-strike.
Define a “step”.
from toe-off/heel strike of one foot to the toe-off/heel strike of the other foot.
Define a “Stride.”
One complete cycle, left toe-off to left toe-off; initial contact to ipsilateral contact.
What are the three intervals of the stance phase?
1) Heel strike
2) Midstance
3) Toe-off
What are the percentages for the floor contact period and the swing phase?
60% floor contact period and 40% swing phase.
What happens to the double support phase as you move to jogging/running?
The double support phase becomes a float phase where neither foot is in contact with the ground.
