Biomechanics &Kinematics of Asana Flashcards
How would you identify if a student who has hypermobility in their āsana practice and how would you rectify this?
Musculoskeletal biomechanics describes how greater mobility within joints creates the least stability and vice versa.
You would noitce for example in Urdva Mukha Svanasana, the elbows may not be straight and in an anterior bend toward the front of th ebody. To rectify I’d prompt students to keep micro bends in their joints so not to over extend.
Discuss how the various factors affecting bone and skeletal health may impact on a student’s āsana practice and indicate how you would manage this within your yoga class.
Regular practice is particularly beneficial to bone health due to its weight bearing effects on bone as well as healthy stresses applied in a variety of unusual directions. This healthy stress strengthens bone by depositing layers of calcium into the bone matrix, indicating that lack of movement weakens bones.
Discuss the significance of the use of Bandha for joint support and stability during each āsana and why is this knowledge fundamental for Yoga students.
Kinetics is the study of how force impacts the joints and kinematics is the analysis of the movements of the body.
The biomechanics of Yoga is an intricate investigation into how the body moves into and out of each posture.
Equal weight distribution across the surface area of a joint whilst maintaining movement integrity leads to greater stability and safety. When a joint moves out of its natural position or has limited movement and bears weight this is where injury is more likely to occur.
When we have an appreciation of biomechanics, we also understand how to prevent injury.
