biomechanics Flashcards
moment is also known as
torque
define moment/torque
rotational effect of a force about a point
Moment = force x distance
define lever
machine that operates on moments
how does a lever work
rigid bar (bone) that acts on an axis (joint) and has an applied force (muscles) acting on a resistance force (bodyweight and other external forces)
types of levers
first class: axis is in the middle
ex: C1 joint is in the middle bw front of skull (weighed down by gravity) and back of skull (force applied to keep head level)
second class: resistance is in the middle
ex: during heel off, gravity (resistance) is in between MTP joint ( axis ) and calf (force)
third class: force is in the middle
ex: muscle (force) is between joint and weight at other side (carrying dumbbell)
most common lever in humans
third class
