Biomechanics Flashcards
Define levers
the simplest of machines that has two main functions in the body: increase load and increase velocity
Define balance
the ability of an object to maintain equilibrium when stationary or moving
Define impulse
the application of force over a period of time to change the momentum of an object
Define COR
refers to the bounciness of a ball and measures how much energy remains after a collison
What are the three factors affecting COR
equipment and materials, temperature of the ball, velocity of the collision
Define torque
the turning motion effect created by an eccentric force being applied around an axis
Define range of motion
the extent of motion around an axis
What are three ways to increase angular momentum
increase linear momentum, apply greater force at take-off, increase segmental interaction at take-off
Define conservation of linear momentum
a spinning body will continue spinning unless acted on by an external force
Define moment of inertia
the resistance of a body to changing its angular acceleration
Define newton’s first law
an object in motion will stay in motion and an object at rest will stay at rest unless acted upon by an external factor
Define newton’s second law
when the same force is applied to two objects of different mass, the object with the lower mass will accelerate faster
Define newton’s third law
for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction
What are two ways torque can be increased
apply greater force, increase the length of the moment arm
What are two ways torque can be decreased
apply less force, decrease the length of the moment arm
