Biomechanics Flashcards
What is biomechanics?
The study of mechanics as it relates to function of the human body
What is kinetics?
The analysis of forces acting on the body
What is kinematics
The analysis of movements
What are the main two types of motion?
Linear motion
Angular motion
What is linear motion?
Where something is heading in a straight line
What are the two types of linear motion?
Rectilinear motion
Curvilinear motion
What is rectilinear motion?
Where all points move at the same distance by the same degree at the same time
What is curvilinear motion?
Where all points move at the same time and trajectory but in curved motion
What is angular motion?
Where things begin to rotate around an axis
What is general motion?
It is the combination of linear motion alongside angular motion to create one or a series of movements
What is an example of general motion in terms of linear motion and angular motion?
A cyclist keeping their head rigid whilst riding will be linear motion since all points are moving at the same time/distance/angle. Alternatively, he is having to pedal with his legs which will involve angular motion since there is movement which is rotating via an axis. These two movements together are called general motion.
What is kinematics used for?
It is often used to characterize elite performance
What is an example of kinematics being used to characterize elite performance?
Analysing movement patterns of a golfer to generate speed, whilst controlling to make optimal contact with the ball.
What are the methods of collecting kinematic data?
Inertial system
Electromagnetic system
Optical system
Spatial reference system
What is the spatial reference system used for?
Allows us to track someones position over time.
Labs use Cartesian coordination system
