Biomass PPQ Flashcards
Explain the term Biomass
Biomass is a general term for material derived from plants or animals
Identify 2 crops that are commercially grown to produce Biomass
Any 2 of Willow, Poplar, Elephant grass, Maize and Sugar cane
Describe the global debate that surrounds farmers growing crops for energy
Population is growing at a dramatic rate. This is increasing food demand for human survival. The land used in growing energy crops might be better off being used in food production.
What is the typical energy efficiency that is obtained from Biomass
Around 90%
Explain the term “Energy Density”
The amount of energy stored in a given region or space per unit mass
State two properties which could be compared and contrasted when assessing different types of woodchip for use as biomass fuel
Any 2 of Moisture content, Porosity, Bulk density and Energy density
Outline the process of gasification in relation to biomass
Gasification is a process that converts organic or fossil based carbonaceous materials into carbon monoxide, hydrogen and carbon dioxide. This is achieved by reacting the material at high temperatures, without combustion, with a controlled amount of oxygen and / or steam to produce syngas.
Describe the process of gasification of Biomass
Biomass is converted into a mixture of Carbon monoxide and Hydrogen, commonly known as Syngas
State three applications in which the main product of the gasification of biomass can be utilised
Any 3 of The production of Ammonia/Methanol/ Synthetic petroleum, a lubricant in chemical processes, as a fuel
State 1 advantage and 1 disadvantage of using commercial anaerobic digesters
Advantages: Treats waste and reduces greenhouse gases, Produces biogas, Can be in the local area of the site.
Disadvantages: Requires a steady supply id a consistent feedstock, Quality will vary, Slow process with potential for heating costs.
