Q

What is the need for receptors inside and outside the body?

A

The nervous system is able to detect stimuli that can come from inside or outside of the body. The brain can respond to this in order to maintain homeostasis,

Q

What is the locations of the sense receptors in the skin, eyes, ears, tongue and nose?

A

Skin - all over the outside of the body
Eyes - rods and cones (back of eyes in retina)
Nose - small patch of tissue is nose
Ears - Has receptor cells in cochlea
Tongue - on tongue

Q

Explain the role of each factor in the stimulus response model

A

Stimulus - a change in an organism
Receptor - the receptor cells in out sense organs detect change in our environment
Control center - where the decision is made
Effector - organ that controls the response (usually muscles)
Response - final response to stimulus

Q

How does the hypothalamus maintain homeostasis?

A

Monitors the temperature of blood as it flows through the brain and therefore responds to changes in core body temperature. The hypothalamus coordinates appropriate responses to return body temperature to set point.

Q

What are the divisions of the NS?

A

CNS - controls thought processes, registers information from sense receptors and is the transmitter, receiver and pathway to all information
PNS - controls the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord

Q

How is cellular respiration and metabolic reaction?

A

Oxygen is inhaled and combines with glucose, forming a metabolic reaction which turns the formula into energy.

Q

How do the paths of the brain maintain homeostasis?

A

The brain monitors changes in the body through sense organs and sends messages to form responses to a stimulus.

Q

What are the different regions in the brain?

A

Cerebrum - main part of the brain which processes sensory input, long-term memory, emotions and short term memory.
Cerebellum - small part of brain which controls posture, balance, motor control of coordination, speech and motor of learning
Brainstem - connects brain to spinal cord

Q

What are motor neurons?

A

motor neurons - long to carry nerve impulses away from CNS. Axon terminals are connected to muscles and glands to translate nerve impulses from the CNS to effectors

Q

What nervous systems are systems are responsible for what?

A

Autonomic - involuntary
Somatic - voluntary movements
Sympathetic - flight or fight response
Parasympathetic - rest and relax actions (breathing and digesting)

17
Q

Define excretion

A

The process in which metabolic waste is eliminated from an organism

18
Q

What is the role of the human digestive system?

A

To convert food to energy and eliminate waste

19

Define metabolism

A

The chemical reactions that occur within the body
