Biology Yr 7 Spring Test Revision Flashcards
What is the function of the nucleus?
It controls the activities of the cells and contains the DNA.
What is the function of the cytoplasm?
It is the jelly like substance that keeps the cell in its shape.
What does the cell membrane do?
The cell membrane controls what goes in and out of the cell. This is called being selectively permeable.
What do the ribosomes do?
The ribosomes make the cell’s protein.
What does the chloroplast do?
The chloroplast contains chlorophyll and produces energy through the process photosynthesis.
What does the cell wall do (only in plant cells) ?
The cell wall strengthens the cell, protects it from infections and harm and provides rigidity and strength for the cell.
What does the vacuole do?
The vacuole stores food and nutrition within the cell.
What is the function of a specialised cell?
The function of a specialised cell is that it carries out a particular role in the body, for example the nerve cell sends motor messages from the outside world to our muscles.
What is fertilisation?
Fertilisation is when the female gamete (egg cell) and the male gamete (sperm cell) fuse to produce a zygote that develops into an embryo (ball of cells).
What is the structure of the sperm cell and egg cell?
The sperm cell consists of a haploid nucleus, a propulsion system to move the nucleus and a sac of enzymes that enable the nucleus to enter the egg. The egg cell is structured with the central nucleus that contains the female genetic material.
The function of the male reproductive system is…
To produce sperm cell in the testes to fertilise the egg cell during sexual intercourse.
The functions of the female reproductive system is…
- to allow a foetus to develop in the uterus (womb)
- to produce egg cells in the ovaries
- to give birth to the baby
How is an embryo formed?
It is formed when the egg cell travels down the oviducts and potentially meets a sperm cell. Then the nucleus of the sperm cell joins with the nucleus of the egg cell.
Describe the changes of the uterus during the menstrual cycle.
During the menstrual cycle, the uterus lining thinkers and needs a lot of blood. When the egg doesn’t get fertilised, the uterus sheds and passes out of the body with the unfertilised egg.
What is implantation?
Implantation is when the fertilised egg sinks through the uterus lining. The thick part of the uterus is still needed so menstruation doesn’t occur.
