Biology Vocab 1 Flashcards
What is dynamic equilibrium?
A system that constantly changes and adjusts to change so that little change actually occurs
Human impacts on dynamic equilibrium
Fossil fuels, ozone, forestry, pollution, national parks, hunting, and other things that may impact dynamic equilibrium
Parts of the biosphere
Lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere
What is the Lithosphere?
The outer crust around the earth
What is the hydrosphere?
The water on earth
What are the levels of the atmosphere in order?
Troposphere, Stratosphere, Mesosphere, Ionosphere, Magnetosphere/Thermosphere
What is an ecosystem?
A group of living organisms that create a self-regulating system through which energy and matter are transferred
What are the two sets of factors in an ecosystem?
Abiotic and Biotic components
What is Abiotic?
A non-living component
What is Biotic?
A biological and living component
What is a medium?
Where an organism lives
What are the three mediums?
Water, soil, atmosphere
What are the characteristics of water?
Support medium, 100x more dense than air, temperature change, gas exchange is more difficult
What are the characteristics of soil?
Composed of: minerals 45%, water 25%, air 25%, organic matter 5%. Classified by: color and texture
What are other abiotic factors?
Light, temperature, altitude, latitude, precipitation, and possibly pollution
How does the biosphere maintain dynamic equilibrium?
Cycles: Matter constantly cycles in the biosphere
Biogeochemical cycles
Abiotic->Biotic->Abiotic
