Q

What is the function of the circulatory system?

A

The circulatory system is where the system delivers oxygen and nutrients to the cell and takes away waste products such as carbon dioxide.

Q

Explain what happens when the blood is past through the lungs

A

When the blood is past through the lungs its pressure is reduced this is because the blood is returned to the heart to increase its pressure so that it can be circulated through the body as quickly and safely as possible.

Q

Why is double circulation necessary?

A

When blood is passed through the lungs, pressure is reduced. High pressure is needed to circulate blood to the rest of the body to deliver substances quickly.

16
Q

What is the definition for myogenic muscle?

A

The heart has its own neural conduction system to coordinate contraction of individual muscle cells and does not require any signals.

17
Q

What ions do cardiac muscles need?

A

Calcium Ions, to contract with other muscle cells.

18
Q

Explain the structure of the heart muscle cells

A

The structure of the heart muscle cells allow swift transmission of impulses between the cells as they are joined together at intercalated discs.

19
Q

What is the function for the semi lunar valve?

A

Semilunar valves have flaps that prevent backflow of blood.

20
Q

What is the definition of the right atrium?

A

Segment of the heart that receives deoxygenated blood.

21
Q

What is the definition of the right ventricle?

A

Region of the heart that pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs.

22
Q

What is the definition of the left atrium?

A

Receives oxygenated blood from the lungs.

23
Q

What is the definition of the left ventricle?

A

Region of the heart that pumps oxygenated blood to the body.

24
Q

What is the function of the Sinoatrial node (SAN)?

A

The sinoatrial node is located in the wall of the right atrium. The function of the SAN is to control how fast the heart beats this is also known as a pacemaker.

25
Q

What is the function of the Atrioventricular node (AVN)?

A

The atrioventricular node is known for the electrical impulses to pass from the atria to the ventricles to initiate ventricular systole.

26
Q

What is the function of the Bundle of His?

A

Bundle of His - It’s function is that it consists of specialised muscle fibres that conduct electrical impulses down the interventricular septum and consists of the left and right branches.

27
Q

What is the function of the Purkinje Fibres?

A

These fibres transmit impulses to the ventricular walls.

28
Q

What are Coronary Blood Vessels?

A

The heart acts as a pump to push blood around the body. All the blood travelling through the atria and ventricles in the heart just passes through the heart chambers. However, the heart muscle itself does need oxygen and nutrients to function. The blood vessels that supply the cardiac muscle with oxygen and nutrients as well as remove waste products are called the coronary arteries.
