Biology unit 4 Flashcards
Recessive allele
An allele that effects the phenotype of an organism only when a dominant allele is not present
Test cross
Testing a suspected heterozygote with a known homozygous recessive
Gene
A section of DNA coding for the synthesis of a single polypeptide
Heterozygous
A diploid organism that has inherited different alleles for the same gene from their parents
Lock
The position of chromosomes where genes occurs
Co dominant alleles
Pairs of alleles that both effect the phenotype when present in a heterozygote
Genotype
The genetic construction of an organism
Allele
One alternative form of a gene occupying a specific place on a chromosome
Carrier
An individual with a recessive allele of a gene that does affect their phenotype
Dominant allele
An allele that effects the phenotype of an organism, whether present in a homozygous or heterozygous condition
Homozygous
A diploid organism that has inherited the same allele for a single gene from both parents
Non disjunction
When homologous chromosomes fail to separate property during meiosis
Phenotype
The characteristics or appearance of an organism
Gene pool
All the alleles of all the genes of all individuals of a species at any one time
Allelic frequency
The number of times an allele occurs within a gene pool
-p or q
