Biology unit 1 Flashcards
What to consider a living thing
1.Made up of cells
2.Contains DNA
3.7 Life characteristics
Why do animals move?
To find food, water, shelter, to hide from
predators and to reproduce.
Why do plants move?
Plants move towards
sunlight which they need to
make food.
Roots will move
towards water and
gravity.
Some flowers close during
the night.
Movement
The ability of organism to change its position or place where the whole organism or a part of the organism.
Respiration
Respiration is a chemical process in which the cells of an organism break
down nutrient molecules( like glucose) to obtain energy.
Glucose + Oxygen
→ ENERGY + Carbon dioxide + Water
Sensitivity
the ability of living organisms to detect and
respond to stimulus/stimuli.
STIMULUS/STIMULI
Changes in the surroundings.
GROWTH
A permenant increase in the cell size or drymass
Drymass
Mass of an organism after the water content has been removed
REPRODUCTION
Reproduction is the making
of new organisms of their own kind.
EXCRETION
Excretion is the process of removal of waste products of metabolism ,
substances in excess & toxic materials from an organisms body that
would otherwise cause it harm.
Metabolism
All chemical reactions that happen in body.
NUTRITION
Nutrition is the obtaining of food for energy & to keep an
organism healthy.
Classification
Sorting organisms into smaller groups.
Why is classification important?
To identify and study living organisms and to communicate with scientists from other countries or regions.
How are organisms classified?
Based on homology and analogy
Homology
Same structure different function
Analogy
Same function differnt structure
Species
similar looking organisms that are capable of
breeding and producing fertile offsprings.
Heirarchy of classification
KINGDOM——>PHYLUM——>CLASS—–>ORDER——>FAMILY—->GENUS—->SPECIES
On what are organisms classified based on?
Morphology and Anatomy
Anatomy
Arrangment of internal structure
Morphology
Physical apperances
