Biology Unit 1 Flashcards
Non living materials in the environment, such as rain, gases in the air, and chemicals in the soil.
Abiotic
All areas on, within, and around the planet Earth that are capable of supporting life.
Biosphere
Two or more atoms held together by a chemical bond.
Molecule
All the living individuals of the same species that occupy the same area and are likely to bread with one another.
Population
The basic unit of matter that can not be broken down further.
Atom
The smallest fundamental unit of structure and function in life.
Cell
A collection of tissues grouped together based on a common general function.
Organ
A group of similar cells carrying out the same detailed function with in an organism.
Tissue
Living organisms or their remains. They use energy and raw materials to grow, sense, and respond to changes in the environment.
Biotic
All of the populations interacting with each other within a specified area.
Community
An integrated collection of organs in the body that work together to perform a vital function.
Organ system
Area of the Earth with similar characteristics of living and non living things.
Biome
All the living things in a particular area together with the abiotic materials and conditions in that area.
Ecosystem
A specialized structure within a cell formed when a specific set of molecules bond, creating a subunit that has a specific function.
Organelle
The scientific study of life
