Biology two Flashcards
Diffusion
the movement of molecules from an area of higher concentraion to an area of lower concentration
Osmosis
the diffusion of water
Offspring
a new iorganism produced by one or more parents
Asexual reproduction
Reproduction involving only one parent and producing an identical offspring
Sexual reproduction
Reproductuion involving two parents producing a non-identical offspring
Zygote
the first cell formed when the egg meets the sperm; the cell formed at conception
Differentiation
the transition to a more specialized state. Ex. After the zygote divides, some cells differentiate into brain cells, some into skin cells, etc.
Karyotype
A picture of chromosomes lined up in pairs
Double helix
The structure of the two strands of DNA which twist and turn
Mitosis
the process of cell division in which a cell with a nucleus produces two identical copies of itself
Meiosis
The process of cell division which results in four non-identical daughter cells
Evolution
The process by which new species develop from pre-existing species over time
Unicellular
Consisting of just one cell
Multicellular
Consisting of more than one cell
