Biology - The Science of Life Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 4 basic types of organic compounds?
A
- Proteins
- Nucleic Acids
- Carbohydrates
- Lipids
2
Q
What is a monomer?
A
- a basic molecule that can combine with other monomers to form polymers
3
Q
What is a polymer?
A
- a collection of monomers combined at a molecular level
- for amino acids, peptides are molecules that bind them together to form polypeptides, or proteins
4
Q
What are the monomer names for the 4 basic organic compounds?
A
- proteins = amino acids
- nucleic acids = nucleotides
- carbohydrates = monosaccharides
- lipids = glycerol and fatty acids
5
Q
What are the polymer names for the 4 basic organic compounds?
A
- proteins = polypeptides
- nucleic acids = DNA and RNA
- carbohydrates = polysaccharides
- lipids = diglycerides, polyglycerides*
- technically diglycerides and polyglycerides are not polymers as they are not bonded end to end as with other polymers
