Biology - The Eye Flashcards
Retina
Layer of light sensitive receptor cells which change the light image in to electrical impulses
The eye
The Eye
Sclera
Tough white outer layer of the wall of the Eye
Fovea
Central region of retina, provides coloured vision
Choroid
Pigmented layer of tissues that prevent reflection of light rays inside the Eye
Blind spot
Region lacking receptor cells.
Where the optic nerve leaves the Eye
Optic Nerve
Carries nerve impulses from the Eye to the brain
Humour
Transparent watery/jelly like liquids that fill the inside of the Eye.
Helps to maintain the shape of the Eye ball.
Ciliary body
Contains muscles that contract or relax to alter the shape of the lens
Cornea
Transparent cover at the front of the Eye.
Allows light in.
Does most bending of light.
Iris
Alters diameter of the pupil to control amount of light entering the Eye
Pupil
Hole through which light rays pass through to the back of the Eye
Lens
Changes shape to focus light on the retina
Suspensory Ligaments
Attaches the lens to the ciliary body.
Holds lens in place
