Biology-The Circulating System Flashcards
The blood is made up of
4 compounds
Plasma
Carries cells and transparent materials around the body
Red blood cells
Contain haemoclobin that transport oxygen
White blood cells
Fights infection
Platelets
Clot the blood
Veins
Brings blood to the heart
Low pressure
Have valves to prevent back-flow
No oxygen, Thin walls
Arteries
Brings blood from the heart
High pressure
Oxygenated blood, thick walls
Capillaries
Small thin walls
Connect arteries and veins
Allow oxygen to leak out and get to the cells
Cardiac muscle
Muscle that doesn’t get pierced
Septum
Wall that separates the two sides of the heart
Valves
Prevents back-flow
Vena cava
Takes deoxygenated blood back to the heart
Pulmonary artery
Takes blood to the lungs to collect oxygen
Pulmonary vein
Takes oxygenated blood back to the heart
Aorta
Takes blood around the body
