When nitrogen fixing bacteria convert the nitrogen in the air into ammonia and nitrates push the plant converts to proteins and nitrifying bacteria provide nitrates to the soil and contribute small amounts of nitrates to the soil from nitrogen in the air and then the denitrifying bacteria in the soil convert unused nitrates back into atmospheric nitrogen to complete the nitrogen cycle
