biology test 7.1-7.2 Flashcards
Anton Van Leeuwenhoek
First to observe bacteria and protozoa.
Cell Theory
All living organisms are composed of cells.
Cell Wall
Rigid structure found in plant cells, maintains shape.
Central Vacuole
Maintains rigidity in plant cells when filled.
Centrosomes
Organizing center for microtubules in animal cells.
Chloroplast
Organelles that convert light energy into carbohydrates.
Cristae
attaches o the mitochondria and stores the enzymes for chemical reactions
DNA
Genetic material found in eukaryotic cells. made with DNA wrapped aorund protein
Electron Microscope
Uses electron vacuum; cannot observe living specimens.
Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)
Internal membrane system for protein and substance transport.
Eukaryotic Cells
Organisms with cells that enclose their nucleus. ex - animal cells
Free Ribosomes
Ribosomes that remain in the cytoplasm. used within the organelles’ and to build orgenelles
Golgi Apparatus
Processes and sorts proteins; modifies received proteins. modifies received protein in the liquid that is inside of it
Light Microscope
Magnifies images using multiple lenses, low resolution.
Lysosomes
Contain enzymes to break down waste materials.
