Biology Test 2 Flashcards
“A species
“A species is a group of similar organisms that can breed and produce fertile offspring.”
Population
“is a group of individuals that belong to the same species and live in the same area.”
Community
“An assemblage of different populations that live together in a defined area is called a community”
Ecosystem
“All the organisms that live in a place, together with their physical environment, is known as an ecosystem.”
Biome
“A biome is a group of ecosystems that share similar climates and typical organisms.”
Biosphere
“Our entire planet, with all its organisms and physical environments, is known as a biosphere.”
Biotic factors
“The biological influences on organisms are called biotic factors”
Abiotic factors
“Physical components of an ecosystem are called abiotic factors. Biotic”
Autotroph
Organism that can make its own energy.
Heterotrophs
Organism that cannot make its own energy (through photosynthesis)
Carnivores, herbivores…animals
Name each trophic level
- Apex predators - animals that have no predators (sharks, decomposers)
- Tertiary consumers - carnivores who eat carnivores
- Secondary consumers - Carnivores
- Primary consumers - Herbivores
- Primary producers (autotrophs) plants
Importance of decomposers
They decompose uneaten, dead, primary producers. Which releases the nutrients to renter the food web.
Ecological pyramid
Illustration of the relative amounts of energy or matter contained within each trophic level in a given food chain or web. Shows how much energy is stored in each trophic level.
