Biology Terms Flashcards
What is a habitat?
The place where an organism lives.
What is an environment?
All the conditions or factors experienced in the habitat.
What is a population?
A group of individuals of the same species living in a particular area at a specific time.
What is a community?
All the populations (living things) in a given area at a specific time.
What is an ecosystem?
All the communities (living things) and the physical environment (non-living things) in an area at a specific time.
What is a niche?
The role or way of life of an organism in a community.
What are biotic factors?
Factors due to other living things within the habitat.
Examples include food supply, predation, competition, etc.
What are abiotic factors?
Factors due to physical or climatic conditions. Non-living factors which affect the habitat.
Examples include light intensity, rainfall, day length, pH levels, tidal exposure, etc.
What are structural (or morphological) adaptations?
The physical features of the organism, including its shape or body covering, as well as its internal organisation.
What are physiological adaptations?
How the organism’s metabolism works, enabling it to regulate bodily functions and perform special functions.
Example includes excreting chemicals as a defence mechanism.
What are behavioural adaptations?
Learned or inherited behaviours that help organisms to survive.
Example includes the sounds made by whales.
