Biology Summer term revision UIII Flashcards
What is a cell?
A cell is the simplest living organism in the body that cannot be broken down.
What does a red blood cell do?
Carry oxygen around the body
What does a sperm cell do?
Swims to the egg cell
What is a tissue?
A tissue is a group of cells working together
What is a system?
A system is made of organs working together
Name two human organs and state their job
heart- pumps blood through you body, circulatory system
Stomach- where you digest food, digestive system
Lungs- They take oxygen into your body, respiratory system
How many parts does a animal cell have?
4
How many parts does a plant cell have?
7
What is the function of the nucleus?
Contains the DNA of the cell
What is the function of cytoplasm?
It is the site of chemical reactions
What is the function cell membrane?
Controls what enters and leaves the cell
What is the function of mitochondria?
Carries out respiration (release of energy from the cells)
What is the function of a cell wall?
To provide the cell with structure made from cellulose
What is the function of the vacuole?
Stores cell sap which provides the cell structure
What is the function of chloroplast?
Carries out photosynthesis and contains a pigment called chlorophyll
Which structures are found only in plant cell?
Chloroplast, vacuole, cell wall
What pigment is found in the red blood cell?
A red pigment called haemoglobin
What shape is the red blood cell?
Biconcave shape
On a ciliated cell, what are the tiny hairs called?
Cilia
What is the oviduct?
Moves eggs towards the uterus
Why does the red blood cell have no nucleus?
So that it has a flexible shape so that it can squeeze through tiny blood vessels and to maximise its space to carry oxygen
Why does the sperm cell have mitochondria?
To provide energy to swim to the egg
What is the feature of a root hair cell?
Long extensions to absorb water and minerals from the soil
What does the digestive system do?
Process food to get energy for cells.
