biology- Species Flashcards
What is a species?
a group of individuals of common ancestry that closely resemble each other and are normally capable of interbreeding to produce fertile offspring.
What is speciation?
the process by which a species is formed.
What is geograhical isolation?
spatial separation of two populations.
What is reproductive isolation?
physical, physiological, ecological and behavioural factors.
What is the study of ecology?
Ecology is the study of the relationships of organisms with each other and their environment.
What are aquatic factors?
salinity, wave action and amount of dissolved oxygen.
What is the environment made up of?
Abiotic/physical Factors( non-living )
Biotic Factors ( living )
What are topographic factors?
angle of slope (features of the earth surface)
Define Biotic Factors
The activities of the living organisms in the environment and the relationship that exist between the living organisms.
What is a population?
A group of organisms of the same species which live in a particular habitat.
What is a community?
A community consists of all the populations which live in the same place and interact with each other.
What is an ecosystem?
An ecosystem is a community of organisms and their physical environment interacting in an ecological unit.
What is a Habitat?
The area in which an organism lives.
What is an organisms niche?
The role it plays in the environment
