what function do carbohydrates have in the body?
they provide energy.
what are lipids and what function do they have in the body?
they are fats and oils
they also provide energy but they also help keep you warm and protect organs like kidneys and heart
what functions do proteins have in the body?
proteins are used to repair body tissues and make new cells for growth
what purpose do vitamins and minerals have in the body?
they are essential vitamins to keep you healthy but you only need tiny amounts.
what is fibre needed for?
fibre provides bulk to food to keep it moving through the gut it isn’t a nutrient but is needed for a healthy diet
why do we need water?
70% of our cells are made up of water. we need to drink to replace the water we sweat, cry, peeing, poop and exhale.
how do you test food for starch?
You use a iodine solution to test for starch. if the food turns a dark blue black when you put the iodine solution on it it contains starch.
what colour is iodine solution?
yellow orange
how do you test for lipids?
rub some food on some filter paper hold it up to the light if the papers translucent the food contains lipids.
how do you test for sugar?
add a few drops of BENEDICTS solution to the food solution, heat the test tube in a water bath, if the solution turns orange red the food contains sugar.
how do you test for protein?
add a few drops of copper sulfate to your food, add a few drops of sodium hydroxide solution if it turns purple in contains proetien.
what colour is benedicts solution?
light blue
