Biology Respiration Flashcards
ATP
Adenosine Triphosphate
Stored Energy
ADP
Usable energy
Phosphorylation
Chemical reactions that make ATP by adding P to ADP
Photosynthesis
Formula
Sunlight(energy) + H20 + CO2 = O2 + C6H12O6
Photosynthesis description
- Autotrophs
- Use energy from sunlight to convert water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and glucose
Chloroplast
Description
- Contains DNA
- Contains ribosomes
- Make enzymes required for photosynthesis
- Contain chlorophyll
Factors that affect photosynthesis
- color of light
- light intensity
- temperature
- CO2 availability
- water availability
Cellular Respiration
Cells transfer energy from food molecules to ATP, the byproduct is water and carbon dioxide
Glycolosis
ALL CELLULAR RESPIRATION HAS GLYCOLOSIS!!!
- Glucose is broken down into 2 pyruvate molecules
- Happens in the
cytoplasm
- ANAAEROBIC( don’t need oxygen)
- makes 2 ATP, 2 NADH, 2 pyruvate
Krebs Cycle
- Aerobic (requires oxygen)
- 2 pyruvate diffuse into the matrix of the mitochondria.
- Then they are converted into 2
acetyl-CoA and 2 CO2 are released
-Yields 8 NADH, 2 FADH2, 2 ATP
Aerobic
Requires O2
One glucose molecule yields
36 ATP
Electron transport chain
- happens in cristae of mitochondria
- electron acceptors in the chain accept NADH/FADH2 electrons. As electrons pass down a series of molecules to O2 : the O2 combines with H atoms to form H2O and ATP
- FADH MAKES 2 ATP
- NADH MAKES 3 ATP
Chlorophyll
- Main pigment
- ABSORBS only red, blue, and violet light
Chlorophyll A- transforms photons to chemical energy
Chlorophyll B- traps other wavelengths + transfers it to chlorophyll a
What color might not be shown in a prism
