Biology quiz 1 Flashcards
What is biology?
the study of living organisms
What is homeostasis?
A state of balance among all the body systems needed for the body to survive and function correctly
Atom
the basic unit of a chemical element.
Molecules
a group of atoms bonded together.
Cells
the smallest structural and functional unit of an organism
Tissue
A group or layer of cells that work together to perform a specific function
Organism
an individual animal, plant, or single-celled life form
Population
all the inhabitants of a particular town, area, or country.
Community
a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common
Ecosystem
a biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment.
Biome
a large naturally occurring community of flora and fauna occupying a major habitat
Biosphere
the regions of the surface, atmosphere, and hydrosphere of the earth (or analogous parts of other planets) occupied by living organisms.
Steps of the scientific method (sometimes called “The Nature of Science” or “The Scientific Process”)
Observation, Question, Hypothesis, Experiment, and Conclusion.
Hypothesis vs. prediction
A hypothesis is an idea about how something works that can be tested using experiments. A prediction says what will happen in an experiment if the hypothesis is correct.
Difference between a scientific law and a scientific theory
laws describe what will happen in a given situation as demonstrable by a mathematical equation, whereas theories describe how the phenomenon happens
