Biology - Producing New Cells Flashcards
How many chromosomes are there in one human cell?
46
Whats the middle of a chromosome called?
Centromere
How does a cell get 46 chromosomes?
Sex cells ( 23 )
Whats the 1st stage of mitosis?
Nucleus contains long, uncoiled chromosomes.
Whats the 2nd stage if mitosis?
Chromosomes make copies of themselves and becoe visable as pairs of identical chromatids.
What is stage 3 of mitosis?
Chromosomes line up at the equator.
Whats stage 4 of mitosis?
Spindle fibres pull chromotuds apart to opposite sides of poles.
What is stage 5 of mitosis?
Daugther cells gather at poles.
What occurs in stage 6 of mitosis?
Cytoplasm splits froming 2 new daughter cells ( Have the same number as the parent cell )
Why is it important for daughter cells to have the same number of chromosomes?
No genetic information is lost.
What are stem cells in animals?
Unspecialsed cells whcih can divide in order to self renew.
What are stem cells responsible for?
Growth and Repair.
What are the 2 main stem cells.
Embryonic and Tissue.
What is an embyronic cell?
A stem cell which is found in embryos and can become almost any cell.
Whats a tissue cell?
