Biology Population Ecology Vocab Flashcards
Levels of Organization
reveal the complex relationships between things found in nature.
Organism
individual living things
Population
a group of the same species that live in an area.
Community
a group of different species that live together in one area.
Ecosystem
includes all the organisms and the climate, soil, water, rocks, and other non-living things in a given area.
Biome
a major regional or global community of organisms.
Biodiversity
the assortment, or variety of living things in an ecosystem.
Habitat
all of the biotic and abiotic factors in the area where an organism lives.
Niche
composed of all the physical, chemical, and biological factors that a species needs to survive, stay healthy, and reproduce.
Types of symbiosis & examples
mutualism
commensalism
parasitism
Mutualism
an interspecies interaction in which both organisms benefit from one another
ex) Lesser long-nosed bat & Saguaro
Commensalism
a relationship between two organisms in which one receives an ecological benefit from another, while the other neither benefits nor is harmed.
ex) human & demodiods
Parasitism
a relationship similar to predation in that one organism benefits while the other is harmed.
ex) hornworm & brachial
Carrying Capacity
the maximum # of individuals of a particular species that the environment can normally consist of and support.
Population Density
a measurement of the number of individuals living in a defined space.
