Biology Plants Flashcards
Flower
Reproduction
Leaf
Photosynthesis ).cools the plant when water vapour passes through it (transpiration)
Allows the exchanges of carbon dioxide and oxygen (gas exchanges)
Leaf stores food ( e.g. Lettuce ,cabbage,cress,spinach)
Stem
The stem allows the transport of food, water and minerals around the plant
It also supports the plant and holds it upright
Stem store food (e.g. Potato)
Gas exchange in lenticels
Fruit
Protects seeds
Provides food for seeds
Bud
Allows new leaves and flowers to grow
Apical bud at top.lateral buds on the side
Root
Anchor and support
Take in water and nutrients
Store food ( e.g. Carrots and turnips)
Transported plants
Water is absorbed up through the roots, and travels to the leaves and the tips of the plant through the xylem.
Xylem = water and dissolved solids e.g. Minerals
Phloem= food from leaves around plant
Food= phloem
F and F
Water = kylem
Transpiration
Stomata are little holes on the underside of the leaves.
The flow of water from the roots,up through the plant, and the leaves is called the transpiration stream.
Photosynthesis
Is the process where green plants make food using light energy
Chlorophyll
Is the green chemical needed for photosynthesis,it’s found in the chloroplasts of plant cells
Carbon dioxide
Enters the stomata ( holes on underside of leaf)
Photosynthesis word equation
Carbon dioxide + water>Glucose+ oxygen
How are leaves designed for photosynthesis?
Leaves are flat and thin so sunlight can get through them
Leaves have tiny holes called STOMATA to allow oxygen out and carbon dioxide in
What do leaves need for photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide comes from the atmosphere
Water comes in through the roots from the soil
Chlorophyll in their chloroplasts
Sunlight
What do plants do with the glucose when they make it ?
Like us,plants use glucose for growing and repairing damaged parts
If they don’t use it they store it as starch this is why we can eat plants that store starch such as potatoes and wheat!
