Biology: Plants Flashcards
What are 4 features of a plant?
Embryo Formation, specialized water-conducting tissues, seeds and flowers
What are the 5 categories of a plant?
Flowering, Cone-Bearing, Ferns and Relative, Mosses and relatives and Green Algae
What are the 2 alternating plant phases?
Diploid phase and a haploid phase (shift between them is called alternation of generations)
What is the diploid phase and the haploid phase called? (Multicellular)
Sporophyte and gametophyte
What does a vascular plant have?
Tube-like structures that carry water through the plant.
What do non vascular plants have?
Water is absorbed through cells (NOT TUBE LIKE STRUCTURES)
What are vascular plants also known as?
Tracheophytes (due to water conducting cells, tracheid)
What is tracheid?
hollow tube like with thick cell walls
Where are tracheids found?
The Xylem
What is the Xylem?
A tissue that carries WATER UP from the roots to the rest of the plant
What is Phloem?
Transport nutrients and carbs (produced by photosynthesis) which goes UP and DOWN Phloem=Phood!
Algae…
Doesn’t make seeds; has no true roots or stems
Ferns…
Doesn’t make seeds, has leaves, roots and stems.
Mosses…
Don’t make seeds; have SOME roots, leaves and stems.
Monocots….
Have one cotyledon, fibrous roots, scattered vascular system, parallel veins on leafs, and flower petals are multiples of 3!
Eggs develop in…
The ovary
Dicots….
Have two cotyledon, tap roots, ringed vascular system, net like veins on leafs, and 4 to 5 petals on flowers!
Surrounding the pistil are the male reproductive arts called…
The stamen.
The long tube extending from the ovary is…
The pisitl
The stamen produce pollen, the ______ is part of the plant that receives the pollen.
Stigma
The very top of the plant (skinny little stick with a tounge)
Stigma
Part of the skinny stick; close to the top
Style
Also part of the skinny stick; in the center; carries something to the center
Pollen tube
AALL the way at the bottom of the skinny stick, there are little eggs that are carried in….
The ovary
The actual eggs are called…
Ovules
The whole skinny stick structure is called…
The pistil
The wittle sticks next to the BIGG stick have a fuzzy little thing on top called the….
Anther
The middle of the anther
Filament
The bottom part of the flower
Sepal
The long stick coming from the bottom of the receptacle
Stem
When plants reproduce asexually
Vegetative Reproduction
Asexual reproduction
Plants that do not reproduce sexually
How do mosses and ferns reproduce?
By scattering spores
Dermal tissue
Protective outer covering of the plant
Vascular tissue
Interactions between vascular tissues support the plant body and transport water and nutrients through the plant.
Ground tissue
Produces and stores sugar and contributes to physical support of the plant
Taproot
Root systems where one root grows long and strong.
Fibrous roots
Roots system where branched roots grow from the base of the stem
Meristems
Regions of unspecialized cells that are capable of cell division.
