Biology - Plant and Animals - Photosynthesis Flashcards
Word equation for photosynthesis:
Carbon dioxide + Water —> Oxygen + Glucose
(chlorophyll, excess water, light)
2 stages of photosynthesis:
Light dependent reaction
Light independent reaction
Location of light dependent reaction:
Thylakoid membrane of the grana in a chloroplast
Process of light dependent reaction:
Light is used to split water (input) into hydrogen ions and electrons.
Hydrogen ions and electrons are transferred to light independent reaction while the oxygen from the water is secreted out of the cell.
NADPH
A co-enzyme used in photosynthesis.
Carries hydrogen ions and electrons between light dependent reactions and light independent reactions.
Location of light independent reaction:
Stroma of a choloroplast
Process of light independent reaction:
Carbon dioxide gains hydrogen ions and electrons (brought by NADPH) to form glucose.
This is done by an enzyme called rubisco.
Chlorophyll
A major light trapping pigment for photosynthesis which are located in the grana.
Limiting factors
Factors which prevents a reaction from proceeding at a greater rate, leading to a plateau.
Limiting factors for photosynthesis:
Carbon dioxide
Light intensity
Chlorophyll
Temperature
