Biology Of The Mind Flashcards
Medulla
Base of brainstem; controls heartbeat and breathing.
Thalamus
On top of the brainstem; “sensory switchboard”
Relays messages to the cortex.
Reticular formation
Network of nerves that help with arousal.
Cerebellum
“Little brain” at the rear of the brain.
Processes sensory input and coordination movement and output.
Amygdala
Lima-bean-sized neural clusters in the lambic system; linked to rage and fear.
Hypothalamus
Located beneath the thalamus; it directs maintenance activities (thirst, hunger, body temp, ect.) also linked to emotion and reward.
Limbic system
Neural system (hippocampus, amygdala, and hypothalamus) associated with emotion.
Cerebral cortex
Intricate fabric of cells covering the cerebral hemispheres. Body’s ultimate control and info-processing center.
Brainstem
Oldest part and central core of the brain.
Controls automatic survival functions.
Hippocampus
Related to memory retention.
Frontal lobe
Related to speaking, movement, and planing.
Parietal lobe
(Top/toward the rear) related to touch and body position.
Occipital lobe
(Back) related to vision.
Temporal lobe
(Above ears) related to auditory, from the opposite ear.
Glial cell
Supporting cell in NS.
