Biology - Module 4 Flashcards
What is the formula to calculate abundance from quadrants?
count inside box ÷ total number of boxes x total area
What is the formula to calculate abundance using the capture recapture technique?
number of tagged (first capture) x total number in recapture ÷ number of tagged in recapture
What is temperature measured with, how is it used and what are the units?
Measured with a thermometer.
Use it by putting the tip into the water and waiting for the result.
Units are Degrees Celsius (°C)
What is wind speed measured with, how is it used and what are the units?
measured with a hand held anemometer or a ventimeter.
Use it by holding it up in the air the way the wind is going.
Units are km/h, knots, m/s or old mph.
what is humidity measured with, how is it used and what are the units?
Measured with a wet and dry bulb hygrometer.
How to use:
1. read both thermometers
2. calculate difference in reading
3. use chart to read relative humidity from dry bulb reading
Units are %.
what is light intensity measured with, how is it used and what are the units?
Measured with a photoelectric meter.
Use it by holding it faced up into the sky.
Units are lux
What is pH measured with, how is it used and what are the units?
Measured with a pH scale.
Use it by matching your liquid or solid to the keys of the scale.
Units are pH.
What is salinity measured with, how is it used and what are the units?
Measured with a refractometer.
How to use:
1. Open the prism cover
2. Place a few drops of saltwater onto the prism
3. Close cover
4. Look through the eyepiece with the refractometer directed towards a light source
5. Adjust lens focus by turning eyepiece (if needed)
Units are “0/00” = “parts per thousand”.
How do you calculate percentage cover?
count boxes ÷ total boxes x 100
What is quantitative data?
numbers
What is qualitative data?
non numbers
what are the three variables?
- dependent variable - measure
- independent variable - change
- controlled variable - kept same
what is control?
no change and no comparison
How do you know something is valid?
How ccurately the method measures what it is intended to measure
How do you know if something is reliable?
repeat more than 10 times.
