Biology Module 3 2.0 Flashcards
Ecology
The study of the interactions between living and nonliving things
Example sentence: The ecology of the forest was studied by the researchers.
Population
A group of interbreeding organisms coexisting together
Additional information: Population size can be affected by factors such as food availability and predation.
Community
A group of populations living and interacting in the same area
Example sentence: The community of species in the coral reef is diverse and complex.
Ecosystem
An association of living organisms and their physical environment
Ecosystems can vary in size and complexity, from a small pond to a vast rainforest.
Biome
A group of ecosystems classified by climate and plant life
Example sentence: The tundra biome is characterized by cold temperatures and low-growing vegetation.
Biosphere
The sum of all of Earth’s ecosystems in land, water, or air
The biosphere includes all living organisms on Earth and their interactions with the environment.
Species
One or more populations of individuals that can reproduce under normal conditions, produce fertile offspring, and are reproductively isolated from other such populations
Species diversity is important for maintaining ecosystem stability.
Biotic Factors
Any living part of an environment
Biotic factors can include plants, animals, fungi, and bacteria.
Antibiotic Factors
The nonliving physical and chemical conditions affecting organisms
Examples of antibiotic factors include temperature, sunlight, and soil composition.
Producers
Organisms that produce their own food
Producers, such as plants and algae, are essential for providing energy to the rest of the ecosystem.
Consumers
Organisms that eat living producers and/or other consumers for food
Consumers can be classified as herbivores, carnivores, or omnivores depending on their diet.
Decomposers
Organisms that break down the dead remains of other organisms
Decomposers play a crucial role in recycling nutrients back into the ecosystem.
