Biology Module 1 Flashcards
1
Q
What is a cell?
A
It is the smallest structural and functional unit of a living organism; they are the building blocks of life.
2
Q
What is an organelle?
A
A membrane-bound compartment within the cell. Each organelle has a different function that helps keep the organism alive.
3
Q
What is the nucleus?
A
-Is the organelle that contains the cell’s genetic information; this is needed for growth repair and proper functioning.
- Around the nucleus, there is a nuclear membrane with small pores called neclear pores.
4
Q
What is the nucleolus?
A
- It is found in the nucleus
- It is mainly made of proteins and ribonucleic acid (RNA)
- It is where ribosomes are made
5
Q
What are ribosomes?
A
- There are small organelles made out of ribosomal RNA and protein.
- ribosomes are not membrane-bound
- sometimes float around in cytoplasm
- Often found connected to endoplasmic reticulum
