Q

Cholesterol

A

Substance found in the blood that is produced by the liver. It is good for you but too much can clog up your arteries with plaque and can lead to heart failure or strokes. Cholesterol is needed for the building of cell membranes.

Q

Droplet infection

A

When you are infected by a pathogen through tiny drops in the air. This is why you should cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze

16
Q

Epidemic

A

When a larger number of infections are reported than is normal

17
Q

Hydrochloric acid

A

A strong acid found in the stomach used to kill any swallowed pathogens. First line of defence

18
Q

Immunisation

A

When your body becomes resistant to a particular type of pathogen

19
Q

Immunological memory

A

Your body remembers how to fight that particular pathogen by producing a unique shape of antibody

20
Q

Independent variable

A

The thing you change in an experiment

21
Q

Inoculating loop

A

Is a metal loop used for collecting bacteria from surfaces for experiments.

22
Q

Metabolic rate

A

Speed of chemical reactions that happen in your body

23
Q

Microorganism

A

An organism that can only be seen under a microscope

24
Q

MRSA

A

A strain of antibiotic resistant bacteria

25
Q

Mucus

A

A sticky substance found in the respiratory system that is a physical first line of defence. It traps pathogens.

26
Q

Obese

A

A person who has a BMI of over 25.

27
Q

Painkillers

A

Drug that relieves pain but doesn’t kill the pathogens

28
Q

Pathogens

A

Microorganism a that cause disease

29
Q

Phagocytosis

A

Ingesting if a bacteria by a white blood cell

30
Q

Statin

A

Drug that reduces cholesterol

31
Q

Small pox

A

A disease that has been eradicated by vaccination

32
Q

Symptoms

A

Indicators of a disease e.g. Swelling, fever, headaches

33
Q

What is a vaccine?

A

Dead or weakened pathogen is injected into the body. This makes the immune system respond and make an immunological memory of that pathogen, so if you ever get infected for real, your body knows how to respond

34
Q

What is transpiration?

A

Process of heat loss
